Measurement lies at the heart of quality improvement. Without the correct measurement tools, measure alignment, and clear operational definitions, QI professionals risk not only burdening their team with inefficient practices, but gathering poor data and drawing poor conclusions. In this program, you will discover what quality measurement is and why it matters, how to set a clear and achievable aim, how to define a family of measures tightly linked to your aim, how to choose and collect the right data, and how to display and analyze your data in run and control charts to support improvement. You can bring your own improvement project or idea and apply course concepts, tools, and methods or choose from several case studies to use as you apply course learnings. You will benefit from online lessons, live webinars, case studies, coaching, and peer interaction.

For quality improvement professionals working to design a practical measurement system to monitor and guide improvement work, this course is the pragmatic approach to assemble a team, build a measurement framework, and analyze data for improvement.

Expert Faculty

Jesse McCall, MBA, Senior Director and Improvement Advisor, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), coaches individuals and organizations through the process of improvement which includes the data-driven identification of strategic improvement priorities, development of operational systems to support improvement, and the building of practical improvement capability necessary for staff to get results that matter. Jesse also has extensive experience in coaching organizations to engage clinical staff to reduce burnout and foster joy in work. He joined IHI in 2007 and over his tenure has designed, executed, and evaluated programs and projects around the world. He is also a Teaching Fellow at The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Jesse has expertise in practical application of the science of improvement, staff engagement and wellness, program and product development, marketing and communications, customer relationship management, and large-scale initiative operations. He received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University in Boston and MBA from the UMASS Amherst Isenberg School of Management.

Robert Lloyd, PhD, Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), provides leadership in the areas of performance improvement strategies, building capacity and capability for improvement, statistical process control methods, and development of strategic dashboards. He also serves as faculty for various IHI initiatives and demonstration projects in the US and abroad. Before joining IHI, Dr. Lloyd served as the Corporate Director of Quality Resource Services for Advocate Health Care (Oakbrook, IL), Director of Quality Measurement for Lutheran General Health System, Senior Director at the Hospital Research and Educational Trust of AHA, and spent ten years with the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania in various leadership roles. He is author of numerous articles, reports, and books.

Rebecca Steinfield, MA, Senior Director and Improvement Advisor, has been with IHI since 1996. She currently serves as Director of IHI’s Improvement Advisor Professional Development Program, teaches IHI courses on improvement methods, and mentors “improvers-in-training.” Rebecca sits on IHI’s Improvement Science and Methods team and serves as an Improvement Advisor on results-oriented work.

What Are We Measuring?

Program participants from across the care spectrum have brought personal projects of varying degrees of scope to this program. Using lessons learned during Better Quality Through Better Measurement, participants have established aims with measurable goals, such as:

To increase the monthly rate of Discharges by Noon (DBN) at our medicine units to an average of 25% to align with system goals by December 2024.
By July 1st, 2024, within 24 hours of admit time, 100% of new admissions will be screened for suicidal ideation using a validated screening tool, and 100% of low, moderate and high scoring patients will be assigned an appropriate level of observation.
To improve overall health and well-being, I aim to increase my daily water intake to meet the recommended 2.7 liters (91 ounces) for women within three months (August 15th, 2024)
We will decrease the number of antibiotic eyedrops prescribed to patients with a conjunctivitis diagnosis by 25% by May 1, 2025.

In support of improving patient care, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the health care team.

IHI is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to assist with program registration costs for those working in:  

Independent, United States Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that are not affiliated with a hospital  or health system  
Critical Access Hospitals  
Independent practices with fewer than 20 physicians  
Hospitals with fewer than 50 beds  
Members of America's Essential Hospitals  
501(c)(3) organization with a defined operating budget of less than $5 million, serving community-based populations  
Ministries of Health  
Faith-based health institutions   
Skilled Nursing Facilities

To apply for a scholarship, please complete the online Scholarship Application by March 3, 2025. IHI will not consider applications submitted after this date.

All Scholarships are reviewed on an individual basis. If multiple individuals from the same organization wish to apply for a scholarship, each individual must submit an application.   

To ensure equal distribution of funds, all scholarships applications are reviewed using the same scoring criteria. All awarded amounts are final.  

Please note, scholarships are available for program registration costs only, and do not cover travel, food, or accommodation costs associated with attending a program.   

Cancellations, Substitutions, and Refunds

Payments: Full payment is due 60 days before the start of the program. If payment in full is not received within 60 days before the program start date, IHI will notify you and cancel your registration.
- Credit card payments: Enter your credit card information online during registration, or call the IHI Customer Experience Department to process payment over the phone.
- Check payments: Please mail a copy of the invoice with your check made payable to IHI.
Cancellations: For cancellations made within 45 days before the start of a program: Registration fees are fully refundable if a written request is received by info@ihi.org on or before 45 days before the start of the program.
Refunds: IHI will issue all refunds in the original payment type (credit card or check) within 30 days. Registrations received after 45 days or less before the start of the program are not refundable.
Substitutions: One attendee may be substituted for another at any time by emailing info@ihi.org.

If for any reason you are not completely satisfied that your attendance in an IHI educational program is a valuable experience, IHI will gladly refund your registration fee per the policies noted above. Please note that due to unforeseeable circumstances, last-minute changes in program titles, speakers, or presentations may be unavoidable.
